For sketching outside, I recommend a retractable Bic pencil with eraser. These are inexpensive and can be purchased anywhere school supplies are sold.
I use a small sketch book no larger than 6”x 8”. Think portable.
Although optional, consider bringing binoculars, a small portable seat, your favorite field guide and a magnifying glass.
Dress for a day outdoors. Check the weather and be prepared for rain or shine. Bring rain gear if needed. Consider bringing water, a hat, sun glasses, bug spray, and sun screen if needed.
You will need watercolor paper. I recommend 140 lb weight as it is easy to draw on and erase. Bring three water color brushes sizes 2-4-8 (small, medium, and large), a small plastic cup or water bottle, and paper towels.
You will need a set of watercolors. It is up to you how much you want to invest in a painting set. There is a watercolor set you can purchase on line from Amazon. It has 12 colors and is Winsor & Newton Cotman Sketchers Pocket Box Set by Winsor & Newton. It costs around $15.00 plus shipping. There will be a color chart provided in the class that will be available for purchase for $5.00. The color chart is based on the following colors that will be used in the class and are included in the sketcher pocket box.
Cadmium pale yellow, Cadmium yellow, Yellow ochre, Burnt Sienna, Cadmium
Red, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue
Cobalt Blue,
Viridian, Sap Green, Burnt Umber, Payne’s Gray
All of these materials can be purchased at your local Micheal’s store or online from DickBlick.com or Jerry'sartarama.com.
